traditional door knobs | georgia

These door knobs are a part of a project in Georgia that we are currently wrapping up.  All fasteners were concealed on the rosettes (and accompanying hardware).  The door hardware including knobs, turn pieces and hinges on the bath interiors is all polished nickel.

turn pieces concealed screws | georgia

These are a few oil rubbed bronze turn pieces that were fabricated for a project in Georgia.  Note the concealed fasteners for a clean traditional appearance.

hardware & design dailed in tight from california

These photos are of an office interior in California were the designer used a parliament hinge for the in-swing casement windows.  Also, note the sensative placement of the casement latch.  In the end it are details like these that make a room just feel ‘right’.

traditional building show | chicago 2008

The 2008 Traditional Building Show was in our backyard this year at Chicago’s Navy Peir.  Our staff members were able to meet and greet several folks that we have only had the chance to email and talk on the phone with.

We had several stop by our shop in Wilmette before, during and after the show.  Don’t miss the opportunity next time you are in town!

Next year we need another table – about 20% of the hardware we brought with to display did not have room.

custom backplate sculpt | exterior door hardware

This detailed corner piece was hand sculpted so that we can make a mold to cast over 400 corner inserts in bronze.  They will then be attached to the plate and finished.  Look for future photos on this project.

winterther estate | hardware suites

winterthur delaware

The Winterthur Country Estate is located on 1000 acres in Winterthur, Delaware.  Henry Francis du Pont created the largest collection of Americana all amazingly under one roof.  To see the collection and the fabulous library collection would most likely require days.  The books available on antique hardware, lighting, architecture are tremendous.

Al Bar Wilmette & Wilmette Hardware have the privilege to offer two suites of hardware for the Winterthur Estate.  These suites will include knobs, levers, rosettes, hinges, turn pcs, etc.  They will be offered in many of our finishes.

polished nickel | demiluna knob & rosette

Often (if not always) in historic renovations or traditional new construction the simple elegance of a delicate rosette and tasteful knob is all a project requires.  Of course being in the hardware business we feel that this is what a discerning eye would immediately track towards (obviously mechanical elements of a home are a requirement as well – but isn’t this just the best?).

burnished nickel plated | traditional oval knob

These oval knobs are some of about 100 pieces for a local project.  The top of the knob was prepared as a casting (see earlier post showing the sculpt detail).  The knobs were all hand finished and waxed in a soft burnished nickel.

P Allen Smith Garden Home | packing (in the) details

When we prepare a hardware package for delivery to a general contractor or installer we attempt to take every step to insure a smooth/organized install.  It is extremely helpful to have an extra cache of fasteners in one location (see photo) and have all components packaged ‘by door’.  Hardware suppliers have an opportunity to assist with getting an installer organized while items are in a shop or showroom (preventing a mess on a job-site).

art deco entry set satin nickel

This deco inspired entry set was recently installed in a north shore (Chicago) home.  Notice that there are no exposed fasteners on this hardware (both inside and out).  The hand finished satin nickel is on all the exposed hardware.  Extended strike plates and armor plates were fabricated for the conditions that allowed the removal of the exposed fasteners.  This set was installed by the fine folks at John Marshall Construction.

brass rim lock | restoration and repair

We had to take a photo of this rim lock.  Mainly because over the past 30 days we have done several and didn’t get them photographed.

Many of these old rim locks were made with all solid cast brass components that wear over time (to a point where they do not operate).  We often build up silver or reinforce parts with a tougher material to prevent or delay additional wear.  Often we are able to do these type of projects (for exterior doors) the same day.

concealed door closer | perkomatic

Are you frustrated by the closers available today that detract from your hardware selection and mill work detail.  Then check this out – you will not have to stay up at night any longer worrying whether your concealed closer is adjustable, fire-rated and relatively easy to install.  We have been using the Perko closers as a part of our hardware schedules for several years now.  A whole lot better than grandma’s spring on her screen door (sorry grandma).
